Bola Tinubu Reacts As Liberian President Concedes Defeat

In a commendable display of democratic sportsmanship, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extends his congratulations to the Liberian government and citizens for the successful conduct of the Presidential Election. In a statement released on Saturday, Tinubu expressed his appreciation for President-elect Joseph Boakai and urged him to unite the nation, leveraging the popular support reflected in the ballot box to deliver effective governance.

President Tinubu specifically praised outgoing President George Weah for his exceptional leadership in conceding the election, thereby preventing potential socio-political crises. Tinubu emphasized the significance of Weah’s actions in the current West African context, where democracy faces threats from those seeking to undermine the people’s will.

The statement quotes President Tinubu as saying, “I commend President George Weah for his sterling example, undiluted patriotism, and statesmanship. He has defied the stereotype that peaceful transitions of power are untenable in West Africa. He has demonstrated that the outcome of elections in the sub-region need not become the propellant of violence and unrest and that the will of the people must always be respected.”

Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the Liberian people for their peaceful exercise of voting rights, urging them to remain steadfast in upholding peace and democracy.

This comes after Liberian President George Weah conceded defeat to opposition leader Joseph Boakai. Weah acknowledged Boakai’s lead in the polls, emphasizing the need for graciousness in defeat. Despite losing the presidential poll, Weah underscored that the people of Liberia emerged as winners.
