Legal expert and public affairs commentator Dele Farotimi revealed that Nigeria’s former military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, famously declared that the country’s primary issue was not knowing how to manage wealth.
He said that this statement was made during a period when Nigeria did not possess a national electricity grid and was actively preparing for Festac ’77, a significant international cultural event.
In Farotimi’s words: “The youngest man to ever be Nigeria’s president, Gowon once said the only problem Nigeria has is Nigeria doesn’t know what to do with money. This was at the time when we didn’t have a national grid. Up until now we still don’t have one, but even at that time, the purpose was unknown, we were busy hosting Festac 77. He was not there by the time but remember it had been initiated long before he left”
