In Kogi State, a Police Inspector, Bamisaye Gbenga, and two other locals were killed when teenagers protested a robbery that left four persons dead last Tuesday.

On Tuesday, robbers attacked banks in the towns of Egbe and Odo Ere in Yagba West Local Government, killing four persons.

The police apprehended two of the alleged robbers.

The enraged mob stormed to the station, demanding that the two suspects apprehended be given to them to lynch, according to a statement released by the State Police Command’s spokesman, DSP William Aya, on Thursday.

“All efforts by the Police to placate the mob proved abortive, and they became violent, in the process lynched one Inspector Bamisaye Gbenga, to death and injured PC Sunday Alechenu.

“In the efforts to dispersed the mob, two persons, a male and a female were maimed but both died in the hospital while receiving treatment. Meanwhile, part of the station was set ablaze by the mob,” he said.

While denouncing the criminal behavior committed by the youth of Odo-Ere, Commissioner of Police Dauda Dabban urged them to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

He told the public that once the inquiry was completed, the suspects will be charged in court and brought to justice.

The Commissioner of Police expressed his sympathies to the families of those who died as a result of the tragic occurrence.
