There was chaos in Aba, Abia State, as security operatives reportedly opened fire on members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who were protesting for the release of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The protesters, who were all dressed in white, had taken to the streets, demanding the unconditional release of their leader.

According to eyewitnesses, the protest started from Assa Road through Azikiwe Road, and on getting to Amaogbonna, soldiers opened fire on the protesters. The incident led to a stampede, as people ran for their lives. It was reported that at least five people were killed in the clash.

The situation has caused tension in the area, with residents expressing fear of a possible escalation of violence. The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders has condemned the killings and called for the immediate arrest, sack, and prosecution of those involved.

In a press statement signed by its President General, Goodluck Ibem, the group described the killings as “wickedness, barbaric, and lawlessness of the highest order.” The statement further read, “It is only the court of law that has the constitutional powers to give an order for the execution of any offender.”
