Bello Muhammad, popularly known as Bello Matawalle, is a Nigerian politician and teacher who has made significant contributions to the political landscape of Nigeria. Early Life and Education

Bello Muhammad was born on February 12, 1969, in Maradun, which at the time was in the North-Western State of Nigeria. He received his First School Leaving Certificate from Maradun Township Primary School in 1979. Matawalle’s thirst for knowledge led him to pursue further education, and he graduated from VTC Bunza in 1984. He then continued his studies at Yaba College of Technology in Lagos before furthering his education at Thames Valley University in London.

Political Career

Matawalle’s political journey began in 1998 when he ran for a house of assembly seat and emerged victorious. He served as Zamfara State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Commissioner for Environment, Rural Development, and Commissioner for Youth and Sports between 1999 and 2003.

In 2003, Matawalle successfully contested and won a seat in the House of Representatives, representing Bakura/Maradun constituency under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). He was re-elected in 2007 and later switched his allegiance to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), where he was re-elected for a third term in 2011.

Matawalle’s political career took a significant turn in 2019 when he became the PDP gubernatorial nominee for Zamfara State. After a Supreme Court ruling disqualified the original winner, Matawalle emerged as the governor of Zamfara State. During his tenure as governor, he implemented various developmental projects and policies aimed at improving the lives of the people of Zamfara.

In 2021, Matawalle made a strategic move by defecting from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This decision was made alongside other elected officials from Zamfara State. The defection marked a significant shift in the political landscape of the state and further solidified Matawalle’s influence and impact in Nigerian politics.

Minister of State for Defence

Since 2023, Bello Matawalle has been serving as the Minister of State for Defence in Nigeria. In this role, he plays a crucial part in the country’s defense and security apparatus. As a minister, Matawalle is responsible for overseeing the policies and operations related to defense, working closely with the Minister of Defence and other stakeholders to ensure the nation’s safety and security.
