Alert: NAFDAC Issues Warning On ‘Dangerous’ Energy Drink

In a recent alert, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised concerns about the G Fuel brand Energy Drinks due to their extremely high caffeine content. These energy drinks, produced by T&E Imports and GPAE Trading Corp, have already been recalled in some countries because of their dangerous caffeine levels.

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have banned the product due to its excessive caffeine content. NAFDAC, in a public alert (No. 034/2023) issued by its Director-General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, warns against the consumption of these drinks.

The agency highlighted that consuming the G Fuel Energy Drink could lead to side effects such as headaches, insomnia, irritability, and nervousness, particularly in individuals sensitive to caffeine, even at low consumption levels. Additionally, pregnant women are advised to avoid these products, as excessive caffeine intake carries the risk of miscarriage and low birth weight.

Adeyeye pointed out that these products lack cautionary statements limiting the number of servings per day and are available for sale online. Importantly, these products are not registered by NAFDAC, and consumers and retailers are strongly urged to refrain from using, selling, serving, or distributing them.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicions of the distribution and sale of such unwholesome packaged food products to the nearest NAFDAC office. NAFDAC can also be reached at 0800-162-3322 or via email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
