Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo Educational Background

Abdullahi Gwarzo’s educational journey began at the renowned Gwarzo Day Primary School, where he completed his primary education and obtained a primary school leaving certificate in 1977. He then enrolled at Kano State Science Education Project Science Secondary School and completed his secondary education, earning a senior secondary certificate in 1982.

Driven by his passion for knowledge and desire to excel, Gwarzo gained admission into Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. He pursued a degree in Textile Engineering and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Tech) in 1988. As part of the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, he served at Asaba Textile in Old Bendel State from 1988 to 1989, gaining valuable practical experience in his field of study.

Gwarzo’s Political Career

Abdullahi Gwarzo’s political career took off after completing his NYSC service in 1989. He joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and actively participated in the political activities of the third republic. In 1991, he contested for the Chairmanship of Gwarzo Local Government Council and emerged victorious, serving from 1991 to 1993.

Gwarzo’s commitment to public service continued as he served as the Executive Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Council in various terms. He held this position from 1997 to 1998 (NCPN), 2004 to 2007 (ANPP), and also served as a caretaker chairman from 2003 to 2004 (ANPP). In recognition of his leadership abilities, he was appointed as the Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Kano State on special duties in 2007.

In 2007, Gwarzo’s political journey took a new turn when he was chosen as the Deputy Governorship candidate on the ANPP ticket, partnering with Malam Ibrahim Shekarau. They emerged victorious in the election, and Gwarzo assumed the role of Deputy Governor of Kano State, serving from 2007 to 2011. During his tenure, he was assigned to supervise the state ministry for water resources, where he played a pivotal role in overseeing the construction of the Watari water works and the reticulation of the greater Kano water project. His dedication to improving access to clean water earned him the nickname ‘RUWA BABA’ (Father of Water).

Gwarzo’s political affiliations evolved over time, and he later defected to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). In 2011, he contested as the party’s gubernatorial candidate in the Kano State governorship election, although he was unsuccessful in his bid.

Current Role As a Minister

Currently, Abdullahi Gwarzo serves as the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal College of Education, Zaria. He has held this position since April 2021, contributing to the development of education in Nigeria.

In August 2023, Gwarzois currently serving as minister of state, housing and urban development in the federation republic of Nigeria.
