Why Tinubu Government Bans ‘Ghana Must Go’ Sacks At Nigerian Airports

In a recent move, the Tinubu-led government has instituted a ban on the use of ‘Ghana Must Go’ travel sacks at airports across Nigeria. This decision, communicated through a November 24, 2023 circular by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), is aimed specifically at passengers traveling through the country’s international airports.

The circular, titled ‘Prohibition of Usage of Ghana Must Go,’ and signed by Henok Gizachew, Manager, Airport Services, outlines the rationale behind the ban. FAAN emphasizes that the use of these sacks has resulted in substantial financial losses for airlines and damage to the conveyor belt systems at airports.

Under the new directive, passengers who intend to use ‘Ghana Must Go’ for travel are required to have their items properly packaged in cartons or hardcovers of a rectangular size.

The ban reflects the government’s response to the widespread use of these sacks, known for their lightweight nature and high load capacity, which has been identified as a contributing factor to the breakdown of conveyor belt systems at various airports in Nigeria, incurring significant costs for airport authorities.
