Born on November 23, 1960, in Tuskegee, Alabama, Robin Roberts grew up in Pass Christian, Mississippi. She excelled in sports, particularly basketball and tennis, during her time at Pass Christian High School. Roberts credits her parents, Lucimarian and Colonel Lawrence E. Roberts, for instilling in her the values of discipline, determination, and faith.

Roberts pursued her higher education at Southeastern Louisiana University, where she graduated cum laude in 1983 with a degree in communication. Following in the footsteps of her sister Sally-Ann Roberts, an anchor at WWL-TV in New Orleans, Robin embarked on her broadcasting career.

Roberts began her broadcasting journey in 1983 as a sports anchor and reporter for WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She then moved on to WLOX-TV in Biloxi, Mississippi, before joining WSMV-TV in Nashville, Tennessee, as a sports anchor and reporter. In Atlanta, Georgia, she worked as a sports anchor and reporter at WAGA-TV and also hosted a radio show for V-103.
