PHOTOS: The Coldest Village On Earth Where Even Eyelashes Freeze

Oymyakon, Russia, is known as the coldest village on Earth, where temperatures can drop as low as -50°C (-58°F).

The village is so cold that everything freezes, including car engines, toilet pipes, eyelashes, food, and glasses.

Villagers are often forced to remain indoors for days due to extreme weather, and they often need the use of a fireplace to keep warm.

Even the village animals need a fireplace to avoid death due to frostbite. Despite the harsh living conditions, the residents of Oymyakon continue to fight the cold because of work.

The village is officially the coldest inhabited place on the surface of the earth, and visitors must be prepared to drive for days along the ‘Road of Bones’ to get there.

The local delicacy is raw foal meat, which is eaten similarly to salami. Fish is also a staple part of residents’ diets, and ice fishers venture out onto frozen lakes using traditional methods to make their catch.

The frozen ground makes it difficult to work indoor plumbing, so most toilets are outhouses. The bitter cold also makes it difficult to dig graves, and the ground has to be warmed with a bonfire before a funeral.
