Ezekwesili Explains Why Akpabio Isn’t Suited for Senate Presidency

Former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili, has expressed strong reservations about the suitability of Godswill Akpabio for the position of Senate President in Nigeria, suggesting that the country’s democracy is on the brink of collapse.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Ezekwesili pointedly criticized Akpabio, stating, “Our sharply declining Nigerian Democracy was apparently further assaulted by @Senator_Akpabio who should never have been answering the title of Senator not to talk of ‘Senate President.'”

Ezekwesili attributed Akpabio’s position to perceived issues within the country’s judiciary, specifically mentioning the Nigerian Court of Appeal. She accused the judiciary of allowing itself to be corrupted and captured by decadent politicians, contributing to the challenges faced by Nigerian democracy.

The former minister acknowledged opposition party members, particularly mentioning Senators like @SenatorNwoye and @ireti_kingibe, for raising their voices on matters affecting citizens. She urged them to continue speaking out and fulfilling their democratic duty.

Ezekwesili’s remarks come amid reported protests in the Senate, where a Labour Party Senator expressed dissatisfaction with Akpabio’s alleged interference in the leadership selection process for the Senate minority leaders. The LP senator contended that his party member was unjustly excluded from the minority group’s leadership.
