The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a warning that SIM cards not linked to the National Identity Number (NIN) will be deactivated by the end of February.

The Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, emphasized the importance of this measure in combating telecommunication-linked crimes and ensuring the security of the country.

The NCC is collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and other relevant security agencies to address this issue.

In addition to the SIM card deactivation, the NCC is considering the deployment of satellite broadband to achieve 70% broadband penetration by 2025. Dr. Maida also highlighted the NCC’s efforts to combat illegal Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) registration, with sanctions planned for those involved in such activities.

Furthermore, the NCC is working with mobile network operators to simplify tariffs and ensure transparency for consumers. The commission is considering regulations to formalize the simplicity of tariffs by these operators.

The NCC’s priority is to protect the interests of consumers while also considering the needs of licensed operators. The commission aims to strike a balance that ensures consumer satisfaction and the operators’ return on investment.
