Chuck Lorre was born on October 18, 1952, in Plainview, New York, to a Jewish family. His father, Robert, faced financial difficulties after opening a luncheonette. Lorre attended the State University of New York at Potsdam but dropped out after two years to pursue a career as a songwriter. During his college years, he developed an interest in rock ‘n’ roll and experimented with substances like LSD. He later admitted to having a dissolute youth until the age of 47 when he entered recovery.
Career
Lorre began his career as a guitarist and songwriter, touring the United States. He wrote the song “French Kissin'” which was later recorded by Deborah Harry. In the 1980s, he transitioned to writing scripts for animated shows and co-wrote the soundtrack for the television series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Lorre joined the writing staff of Roseanne but was eventually fired due to creative differences. However, his time on Roseanne impressed producers and led to his creating his first show, Frannie’s Turn.
Lorre’s second show as a creator was Grace Under Fire, which premiered in 1993 and starred comedian Brett Butler. He then created Cybill, starring Cybill Shepherd, which received critical acclaim and won several awards.
