Mrs Aisha Buhari, Nigeria’s First Lady, is not expecting a child but is undergoing treatment for an unidentified illness presumed to be cancer, according to several presidential sources.
Pictures of Aisha and President Muhammadu Buhari landing in Nigeria from Turkey on Sunday sparked pregnancy speculation, with many Nigerians asking if Aisha is expecting a child.
Aisha was dressed in a yellow lace kaftan with a black shawl wrapped over what appeared to be a baby bump, which she carefully placed her right hand on in one of the photos.
Another photo showed the couple on the plane’s staircase, with the First Lady appearing to be pregnant as she took a gentle step down the flight of stairs.
However, a presidential source revealed on Monday that Aisha isn’t expecting a baby and is ill.
He went on to say that the First Lady’s medicines caused her to gain weight and changed her shape.
“She’s not pregnant. She’s treating an undisclosed disease which is believed to be cancer. The drugs she’s taking had caused her to gain weight,” the source said.
