Appeal Court Orders Rerun Vote, Sacks Senate Minority Leader Mwadkwon

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has cancelled the win of Simon Mwadkwon, who is the Senate Minority Leader, in the Plateau North senatorial election that took place on February 25th.

The Appeal Court has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to hold a new election within 90 days.

The court made a decision on the appeals submitted by Chris Giwa from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Gyang Zi from the Labour Party (LP).Giwa and Zi had disagreed with the decision of the National/State Election Petitions Tribunal in Jos, Plateau State. The tribunal had previously confirmed Mwadkwon of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the senatorial election.

They said that Mwadkwon wasn’t qualified to run for the election because the PDP didn’t have a proper organization. In the main decision, Justice E. Daudu stated that the PDP did not completely follow the High Court’s order because 12 local government areas did not take part in the party congress.

The court made complete findings about the main issue. To prevent chaos, I agree with the people who are appealing that the court should defend a decision made by another court.

I agree with the person who is appealing that the third person involved did not have a valid organization and could not have said that they officially nominated the second person (Mwadkwon) for the election.

Based on what the court found, the appeal is successful because the court order was not followed.

The judge, Daudu, has ordered the first person to hold another election for the Senate in Plateau North within 90 days.
