Early Life and Education

Raised in Port Harcourt from the age of two, Agbani attended Bereton Montessori Nursery and Primary School before being sent to boarding school at the age of ten. Her mother’s battle with breast cancer and subsequent passing became a pivotal moment in Darego’s life, shaping her resilience for challenges.

Despite her conservative father’s wishes, she pursued her dream of becoming a model and auditioned for the M-Net Face of Africa competition. After completing her secondary education at Federal Government Girls’ College, Abuloma, she pursued Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Port Harcourt.

Pageantry Triumphs

In 2001, Agbani Darego was crowned Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria and later represented the country at Miss Universe, securing a place in the top 10. Subsequently, she made history by becoming the first indigenous African to claim the Miss World title. This landmark achievement was met with widespread acclaim in Nigeria.

Modeling Career

Agbani’s modeling career took off after her reign. Invited by Naomi Campbell to participate in Frock ‘n’ Roll, she secured a deal with Trump Model Management in America and a three-year contract with L’Oréal. Breaking barriers, she became only the second Black model after Vanessa Williams to achieve this feat. Her portfolio includes collaborations with renowned brands such as Christian Dior, Sephora, and Macy’s, along with appearances in Elle, Vogue, and other esteemed magazines.

Entrepreneurship and Other Endeavors

Beyond modeling, Agbani ventured into entrepreneurship, launching her denim range, AD by Agbani Darego, featuring jeans, dresses, sunglasses, and bags. She also took on roles as a judge in various pageants and fashion competitions, showcasing her expertise in the industry. In 2010, she introduced the style and fashion reality show Stylogenic on Nigerian television.

Personal Life and Achievements

In recognition of her Miss World win, Agbani received an honorary chieftaincy by the Council of Chiefs of Lagos, making her one of the youngest chiefs in the country. Despite her busy schedule, she pursued a degree in Psychology at New York University, graduating in May 2012.

In April 2017, Agbani Darego married Ishaya Danjuma, the son of billionaire General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, in a ceremony held in Marrakesh. They welcomed their first son in September 2018 and another child in December 2020.
