2023: Atiku Meets British High Commissioner To Nigeria, Laing, Makes Request

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar on Monday met with a delegation of the British High Commission, led by the High Commissioner, Catriona Laing.

The meeting held at Atiku’s residence in Abuja, Naija News reports. During the meeting, Atiku asked for increased collaboration between the government of the United Kingdom and Nigeria in finding solutions to issues that are of mutual benefit to both countries. Also, they discussed a wide range of issues bordering on security, education, agriculture, economy and fostering national unity in Nigeria.

Atiku asked the UK government to play its role in ensuring the 2023 election in Nigeria is free and fair while stressing the importance of democracy’s growth in the country. He stressed that: “the bilateral ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom has a rich history and it is important for both countries to leverage on that to promote issues that are of mutual concern.” On the issue of insecurity, he solicited the help of the British government in tackling the challenges, particularly through the training of Nigeria’s security personnel and intelligence sharing. On the economic front, Atiku expressed the need to among other things, abolish the multiple exchange rate regimes and reduce tax to encourage genuine manufacturers and promote real investments. Furthermore, the PDP presidential candidate lamented the lingering ASUU strike and the crisis in the educational sector. He promised to carry out reforms in the education sector if elected President in 2023.

The British High Commissioner had earlier noted that the meeting with the former Vice President was part of the ongoing engagement of the UK government to enhance democracy and credible elections in Nigeria.
